Solid waste management in Ghana has reached a critical tipping point. Major urban centers generate thousands of metric tonnes of trash daily, filling unengineered dumpsites and clogging city drainage systems. Plastic pollution and sachet water packaging worsen seasonal flooding, while tons of fast fashion textiles from Kantamanto Market and imported electronic waste burden coastal ecosystems. Informal collectors process over half of all municipal waste, but infrastructure limits keep formal recycling rates low. Transforming these environmental challenges into sustainable circular economies requires immediate action, innovative plastic upcycling, and structured waste collection systems across all communities.
